BY MATT CARTER N C State head basketball coach Mark Gottfried did not use the word "des- tiny" to describe how he came to be coach- ing guards Ralston Turner, a fifth-year senior, and Trevor Lacey, a redshirt junior, but it may best de- scribe the turn of events. Turner and Lacey are both from Alabama, and Gottfried is an adopted son after moving to Mo- bile for his senior season of high school basket- ball and playing colle- giately at Alabama for three years. Gottfried also coached the Crim- son Tide from 1998- 2009. It was during Gott- fried's coaching tenure at Alabama that he first began to develop sepa- rate relationships with both Turner and Lacey. Gottfried can recall eat- ing with Turner's parents at a Golden Corral, while his oldest son Brandon and Turner were teammates on the same AAU squad. Gottfried can also remember walking into Butler High in Hunts- ville, Ala., when Lacey was just a freshman there.
