Offensive lineman Jay Jay McCargo of Ar- lington, Va., was one of a handful of prospects to leave University Park this past week with a Penn State scholarship offer. The 6-foot-4, 270-pound junior from Bishop O'Connell High emerged as a top Class of 2016 candidate last summer, when he camped with offensive line coach Herb Hand. Since then, he's remained in contact with both Hand and linebackers coach Brent Pry, but he was still a bit surprised to pick up an offer. "He came up to camp earlier in the sum- mer, so we knew that the coaches really liked him, but we didn't really know they were going to offer," said Jerry McCargo, Jay Jay's father. "But, before the game, we were in the lounge and that's when Coach Hand and Coach Pry came up to us. By the way, those two are great guys. We really enjoyed talking to them. "But they came over and spent quite a bit of time with Jay Jay, my wife and I. We talked about a few things, but they told us during our talk that one of the grad assis- tants was going to grab Jay at some point to take him out to talk to Coach [James] Franklin on the field. So, when we heard that, that's what we figured it was about. I know Jay Jay was really excited." Saturday night's visit was not only Mc- Cargo's first for a game in Beaver Stadium, it was actually his first visit for any college game as a recruit. His father said the Nit- tany Lions set the bar high. "[Jay Jay] thought it was tremendous, and so did my wife and I," Jerry McCargo said. "Everything there was first class, first rate. Jay Jay was very, very excited aCerward and the next day. None of us have ever been in a facility like that with almost 108,000 peo- ple. "The atmosphere was just electric, and everybody was just very friendly. But elec- tric is the best way to describe it." During Jay Jay McCargo's trip in the sum- mer, he and his father became familiar with State College, but they were still fairly new to both the campus and town. Because of that, and the fact that O'Connell had a bye this past week, the family decided to come up the night before the game so they could spend Saturday getting to know the area better. "We checked out a few things," Jerry said. "My wife had never been on campus, so we showed her around, but as you know, the campus was already beginning to fill up around noon with it being such a big game. "But for Jay Jay, he toured most of the fa- cilities back in the summer when he was there for camp. He met privately with Coach Franklin and Coach Pry and Coach Hand then, too, so this was actually his sec- ond time really getting a full Penn State ex- perience." McCargo added, "It won't be his final visit to Penn State, either. Like I mentioned, everything is really first rate. We all enjoyed it." As for visiting some other schools, Mc- Cargo will actually make it two visits in two weeks when he heads to Philadelphia this weekend to visit Temple.
