James Franklin knows Maryland. He spent eight seasons in College Park, first as wide re- ceivers coach from 2000-04, then as offensive coordinator from 2008-10. While with the Ter- rapins, he developed a reputation as a world-class recruiter, and he was on their staff recently enough to have recruited and coached some of their current upperclassmen, a list that includes sixth-year senior quarterback C.J. Brown. "I remember the home visit," Franklin said. "I remem- ber being down in the basement and playing pingpong and pool with him. I remember going to his basketball practice. He's a great kid." Now in his first season as Penn State's head coach, Franklin goes way back with the Terps, but not far enough to have any first-hand knowledge of the last time these two teams played. That game took place at Byrd Sta- dium in October 1993, and the Nit- tany Lions won by the astonishing score of 70-7. They rushed for 526 yards, with Ki-Jana Carter supplying 159 yards and three touchdowns and backup Mike Archie adding 120. PSU The Nittany Lions lead the all-time series, 35- 1-1. MOST REcENT MEETING Penn State and Maryland haven't played since Oct. 2, 1993. The Nit- tany Lions throttled the Terps in College Park that night, winning 70-7 in the final game before Penn State's entry into the Big Ten sent the series, which began in 1917, into a 21-year hiatus. GOOD NEWS Maryland has fielded a big-play offense this fall. Through eight games, the Terps have amassed 13 scoring plays of 20 or more yards. That's one fewer than they totaled in 13 games last season. BAD NEWS Before the series was interrupted, the Terps weren't having much luck against Penn State. After up- setting the visiting Nittany Lions, 21-17, in 1961, Maryland lost 24 in a row. Then, following a 13-13 tie in 1989, they lost the next four games by a combined margin of 190-37. DID YOU KNOW? James Franklin isn't the only Penn State coach to have previously worked at Maryland. Offensive coordinator John Donovan, spe- cial teams coordinator Charles Huff and strength coach Dwight Galt all have made stops in Col- lege Park during their coaching careers.
