Derek Bard ◆ Golf The second-year from New Hartford, N.Y., was one of the top rookies in the country last year, but broke through at the U.S. Collegiate Championships Oct. 17-19 in Alpharetta, Ga., for his first victory as a Cavalier. Bard finished with a 15-un- der-par 201, the third-best tournament score in program history, and his medalist performance helped the No. 25 Cavaliers finish second in the 15-team field during their final competition of the fall season. Golfweek tabbed him as the National Player of the Week following the event. Lauren Diaz-Yi ◆ Golf The No. 18 Cavaliers finished sixth out of 18 teams at the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invita- tional Oct. 10-12 in Chapel Hill, N.C, thanks to a medalist finish from the Thousand Oaks, Calif., native. Diaz-Yi was the first Wahoo women's golfer to win a tour- nament since graduate Brit- tany Altomare captured the 2013 ACC Championships, and just the sixth in program history. Her 7-under-par 209 tied the UVa tournament scor- ing record for a second-year, and she was just one stroke shy of equalling the Cavaliers' all-time low 54- hole score. Stephanie Nauta ◆ Tennis Virginia's women will be well represented at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Champion- ships Nov. 6-9, thanks to a stel- lar performance at the Atlantic Regional in October. N a u t a , a t h i rd -ye a r w h o star ted the fall with a 13-3 record, was the No. 1 seed in singles and dominated with only one match requiring three sets. She also teamed with classmate Maci Epstein to reach the doubles finals, although they fell to teammates Skylar Morton and Cassie Mercer. Ryan Shane ◆ Tennis The Falls Church, Va., native swept the ITA Atlantic Regional titles by winning both the sin- gles championship and team- ing with second-year Luca Corinteli to claim the doubles crown Oct. 16-21 in Charlot- tesville. The third-year is just the sec- ond Cavalier to win both titles in the same year (joining Jarmere Jenkins), the seventh to win the singles crown and part of Virginia's fifth championship duo. The tandem will compete at the ITA National Indoor Championships Nov. 6-9.
