the philosophy at Navy that you should take it one
year at a time. That's it."
CAVALIER CORNER: When you were an as-
sistant coach at Penn State under Rip Engle and
then Joe Paterno, what do you feel you learned that
helped you become a successful head coach?
WELSH: "With Rip Engle, I did not coach a
position under him. I was a scout and ran the scout
team. I helped out on defense. I learned a lot about
a lot of things including scouting, how to break
down tapes and helping the scout team run the other
team's offense.
"I also learned a lot about the kicking game. Rip
Engle had a different approach to the kicking game.
"Joe Paterno hired me to coach the quarterbacks
and the running backs.
"I learned a lot about leadership. I learned what
it took to have a good football team, especially
when it came to the running game. I focused on the
running game ever since I became the head coach
at Navy."
CAVALIER CORNER: If you were starting over
again as the head coach at Virginia, might there have
been anything you would have done differently?
WELSH: "Nothing that I'm aware of."
CAVALIER CORNER: What was your reaction
when you learned you would be named an Atlantic
Coast Conference Legend for the Class of 2014?
WELSH: "I don't know what my emotions were.
I don't know how you get to be a legend. I'm still
alive."
