really steady. Actually, just before com- ing in here, he was in my office because he's got a couple of big projects and exams, and he wanted to be able to meet with an academic counselor to review some things maybe toward the end of practice. So those things pop up all the time, and we make those adjustments and allow guys to be successful aca- demically in school and be able to bal- ance it all because it's difficult. He's doing a great job. I'm proud of him. He's grown tremendously since the day we arrived. I'm curious if you know much of the background with Tim Beckman and the rivalry when he took the job or when Bill O'Brien was here. Does that linger, or have you created much of a rapport with him? I've talked to him at the Big Ten Media Days and the head coaches' meetings. From everything I see, he seems like a pretty good guy and he's working hard to represent Illinois and get their pro- gram where they want it to be. So that's kind of what our focus is on. We're aware of some things that hap- pened in the past. Probably as far as we'll go is last year. I think in this series, it went to overtime last year. I'm always kind of interested in looking at games last year compared to this year to see how things have gone and to be able to measure growth and things like that. But that's probably as far back as we'll go. I was curious about Kyle Carter. He's somebody who caught a lot of balls a couple years ago. It just seems that he's been close to making a lot of plays. How do you look at his year, and have you had to encourage him much? Yeah, I'll look at that at the end of the year. I'm not really sure. I'm not aware of what his stats and numbers were in the past. But we'll go back and look at all of those guys and sit down and have individual meetings with all of them [to discuss] things that we think they need to improve on, things that they're doing well, areas of growth and all of those things. But I think from what I've seen so far, he's handled things well. Like all of them, they'd all like more produc- tion. They'd all like to make bigger plays and do things like that. That's all of us. Christian Campbell was one of those kids who joined the [2014] recruiting class really late. What was his recruit- ment like on your end? What kind of pitches did you have to make him to get up here from Alabama? Christian was highly recruited, the way we look at it. I mean, it's all about how you see it. We've been recruiting Chris- tian for two years. He had come to camp and broad jumped over 10 feet and verti- cal jumped almost 42 inches and ran a 4.4. We had known about him for a long time. He went to the Alabama All-Star Game and was one of the top performers. So we knew about him for a while. For us in the transition, it was finding out what we had at Penn State, what we needed. How many scholarships were available and all of those things working through it. Once we were able to get a good feel for that, we picked up the phone and called him and Torrence Brown, who I think we haven't talked about a whole lot.
