F O O T B A L L R E C R U I T I N G P enn State's football program has seen its fair share of highs and lows lately, but there have been plenty of positives when it comes to recruiting, many of which stemmed from this year's White Out game against Ohio State. The action on the field – Penn State fought back from a 17-point deficit only to fall in double overtime – had everyone talking, but to the 100-plus prospects and their families who were in attendance that night, it was the atmosphere inside Beaver Stadium that made the biggest impression. In addition to quarterback Tommy Stevens, who took an official visit and ultimately ended up making a commit- ment two weeks later, four-star offensive lineman Matthew Burrell Jr. was the only other uncommitted prospect to take an official visit that weekend. The 6-foot-4, 286-pounder from Wood- bridge, Va., has been one of the Nittany Lions' top three offensive line targets for well over a year now, dating back to Bill O'Brien's coaching regime. During that time, he's taken multiple visits, but this was his first time inside Beaver Sta- dium. "It felt like home," Burrell said. "Sterling [ Jenkins], Steven [Gonzalez], Adam [McLean] and a lot of my friends are going there." A few days later, Burrell announced a top three that included Penn State, Ohio State and Tennessee. However, he went on to take one last o1cial visit to LSU in early November, and as of this writing had yet to speak to the media about which way Bill Anderson NEXT GENERATION Burrell, center, is considering an offer from Penn State, while Stevens, right, is already on board.
