P enn State's regular season is nearly over, and only nine of the team's 33 true freshmen have seen action. The rest, including 16 scholarship players who are redshirting, have been sharpening their teeth on the Lasch practice -elds, waiting until at least next year for their moment under the stadium lights. While some are relegated to the scout team where they frequently wear the jersey numbers of the opponent's best players – defensive end Torrence Brown, for ex- ample, wore Joey Bosa's No. 97 in the week leading up to the Ohio State game – others work closely with Penn State's starters, eyeing their every move. So who have been some of the -rst-year players who have stood out at practice this fall? BWI takes a look here: TROY APKE Saf., 6-1, 187 Apke performed so well early in the year that he played his way out of his redshirt more than halfway into the season. His status was also impacted by the season-ending injury that Ryan Keiser su.ered in practice last month – an injury that required Penn State to put another safety in the lineup.
