This year's group of honorees is smaller than usual, but it's made up of players who stood 2rm back in 2012, knowing they would bear the burden of the NCAA sanctions for the balance of their college careers. James Franklin said he is appreciative of their contributions to this year's team, which is one of the youngest in the nation. "I don't think there's any doubt that the experience and the leadership of veteran guys is very, very important," he said. MEN'S ICE HOCKEY Nittany Lions thrash No. 4 UMass Lowell Penn State dominated from begin- ning to end in a 4-1 victory over No. 4 UMass Lowell Nov. 15 at the Tsongas Center in Lowell, Mass. Casey Bailey notched his first two-goal game since Feb. 21, and Taylor Holstrom dished three assists as the Nittany Lions earned their first victory over a top- five opponent. Penn State (6-2-2) led 3-0 after the first period and opened a four-goal lead en route to the historic win. Prior to its victory over the River Hawks, the highest-ranked opponent that Penn State had defeated was No. 10 Michigan last season. Sophomore goaltender Eamon McAdam, who played his first game since Feb. 7, made 24 saves to earn his first collegiate victory. Penn State's defense was strong in front of McAdam, as the Nittany Lions stopped 16 shots before allow- ing Lowell to reach the net. The Lions held Lowell to its fewest goals this season. The River Hawks entered the series leading the nation in goals per game (4.2). WOMEN'S ICE HOCKEY Penn State edges RIT in overtime Led by Caitlin Reilly's two-goal performance, including her winner in overtime, Penn State defeated Col- lege Hockey America foe RIT, 3-2, Nov. 15 in Rochester, N.Y. The Nittany Lions (6-5-3, 1-2-1) opened the overtime period by put- ting two shots on goal and controlling play. Reilly's initial shot was saved by RIT goaltender Ali Binnington, but she scooped up the rebound from be- hind the goal line and bounced the puck off of Binnington's back and into the net. ■ SCORECARD
