T
orii Hunter Sr. teared up the
night his Detroit Tigers dropped
a crucial divisional game to the
Minnesota Twins Sept. 27. The
12‑3 defeat endangered the Tigers'
divisional title — the Kansas City
Royals hovered a game behind De‑
troit in the American League Central
race with only one game remaining.
His 1‑for‑4 performance didn't help
the Tigers' cause much that Saturday,
but the nine‑time Gold Glove winner
had a different reason entirely for the
waterworks.

Hunter Jr. not only saw his first col‑
legiate action that evening and got
both his first career carry and catch,
but the Irish sophomore wide receiver
also scored a touchdown late in Notre
Dame's 31‑15 victory over Syracuse.
