FAN FORUM COWBOY COACHING It's time to start looking at Coach Kel- ly's decision making and play calling as part of the cause, or instrumental in the cause, of all the sloppy play. • His goal-line offense is non-exis- tent. The running back and direct snap from center — which is the staple of efficient goal-line offense — doesn't appear to be in his playbook, which has cost the Irish points over the years. Look at the two goal-line miscues in the Northwestern loss. First he has its mistake-prone QB do- ing a zone-read play with a back in- stead of relying on his line and pound- ing the football up the gut. Secondly, he hands the ball off to receiver Chris Brown at the 2. Really? Since when is he a pound-it-out back that gets you the extra yard? As a coach he has to put his players in better situations — and with calls that can't be changed on the goal line that causes a mistake-prone offense to think more than it has to. Problems on defense and special teams seem to require head coach Brian Kelly putting too much of a bur- den on senior quarterback Everett Golson and the offense. PHOTO BY BILL PANZICA
