Safety John Petrishen of Pittsburgh Central Cath- olic this week became the latest Class of 2015 prospect to pick up a Penn State scholarship offer. Petrishen stands 6- foot-2, 197 pounds and has received three stars from Rivals.com. He had been on Terry Smith's radar for months, but it wasn't until Monday – a few days after an excellent performance against Pine-Richland in the Class AAAA WPIAL championship game at Heinz Field – that he re- ceived an offer. "We played in the WPIAL champi- onship on Friday, and I know they saw me play," Petrishen said. "Coach Smith hit me up aDer the game and let me know I played well. I know he also told Damar [Hamlin, a teammate] that he thought I played well. "So then, a few hours aDer I sent Coach Smith my finalized senior film [on Mon- day], that's when he asked me to call him back. I talked to him, Coach [Bob] Shoop and Coach [James] Franklin then, and that's when they offered me." Petrishen's 170 rushing yards against Pine-Richland may have impressed, but it was his strong performance at Penn State's camp this past summer that put him on the recruiting board in the first place. He had been a relative unknown heading into the camp but went on to post a 4.48-second 40-yard time, a 32.5- inch triple broad jump and, maybe most impressive of all, a 4.1-second shuttle drill. Petrishen came away impressed with Penn State aDer touring the facilities later that day, and as he leD University Park, he hoped that the in- terest was mutual. "It's definitely an offer that I've wanted," he said. "I thought I was going to get it back in the summer, but then talks died down a little bit. I know they were interested in Minkah Fitz- patrick then. "But yeah, I've always liked them. I'm excited about going up there now." With just one regular- season game remaining for the Nittany Lions, Petrishen is wasting no time. He has already scheduled an unof- ficial for Saturday's game against Michi- gan State. "I've never been to a Penn State game, so I'm excited to see what the atmosphere is like up there this weekend," he said. "I know it's a really nice school and I've heard good things. It should be fun." Saturday's trip will be the first of two visits he's planning to take in the next few weeks. The second will most likely be an official visit to Virginia. "I haven't scheduled anything yet, but we're eyeing up a few dates," Petrishen said. "I'm thinking Dec. 5 for Virginia, and I know Pitt wants me to come Jan. 16, but nothing is scheduled yet. I should figure that out soon." Petrishen has totaled 33 scholarship of- fers, most of which are from Ivy League or Mid-American Conference programs. In addition to Penn State, Pitt and Virginia, he has received offers from Syracuse, Temple, Wake Forest, West Virginia, Dart- mouth, Penn and Yale.
