M . | D E C . 3 1 | M A D I S O N , W I S . | B T N The end of the calendar year marks the start of Penn State's Big Ten season, as the Nit- tany Lions will be traveling to the Kohl Center for a New Year's Eve matchup with Wis- consin. Penn State has gone 2-17 in Madison over the years, its most recent victory coming in January 1995. Led by preseason All-American Frank Kaminsky, the Badgers look as tough as ever this year. But the Lions have been making steady progress and are looking to improve on last year's 10th-place 9nish in Big Ten regular-season play. A strong performance against the Badgers would be a big step in the right direction. MEN'S GYMNASTICS Lions ranked sixth in preseason poll After finishing sixth last year at the NCAA championships, Penn State enters the 2015 season ranked No. 6 in the College Gymnastics Associa- tion preseason coaches' poll. The Nittany Lions received one first- place vote. Oklahoma, which finished second last season, was ranked No. 1 with seven first-place votes. The Sooners are also set to host the 2015 NCAA championships April 9-11. Michigan, the defending national champion, is tabbed second with four first-place votes. Ohio State comes in at No. 3 after posting a fifth-place finish at the 2014 NCAA meet. Rounding out the top five in the CGA coaches' poll are Stanford and Illinois. The Cardinal finished third last year, while the Illini claimed fourth at the NCAA meet. The Nittany Lions were picked fourth in the recent Big Ten presea- son coaches' poll, behind Ohio State, Michigan and Illinois. In addition, Trevor Howard and Néstor Rodriguez were selected as Gymnasts to Watch for the upcoming season. The Lions will open their season at Rec Hall on Jan. 11 against Army. Two of the top three teams in the preseason national poll will be vis- iting Penn State this season, with the Wolverines coming to Univer- sity Park on Jan. 24 and the Buck- eyes on Feb. 6. In addition, on March 27 and 28, the Nittany Lions will play host to the Big Ten cham- pionship meet. The Lions will feature 10 freshmen and 15 returnees this season, in- cluding All-Americans Howard, Craig Hernandez and Alexis Torres. Rodriguez, the school record-holder in the parallel bars, is back as well after missing last season with an in- jury. ■ SCORECARD
