by Autry Denson (17 carries for 92 yards and one touchdown) and Clem- ent Stokes (15 carries for 92 yards and two scores), and saw most of the sta- dium empty by the start of the fourth quarter when it was 24-0. NOV. 21, 1998: NOTRE DAME 39, LSU 36 This wacky shootout saw three de- fensive touchdowns scored (includ- ing an 89-yard interception return for a score by Irish linebacker Bobbie Howard), four blocked kicks and the Irish rallying from a 34-20 deficit to improve to 9-1 and remain in the hunt for a Bowl Championship Series bid in its first year of existence. The craziness in this game extended to the end when Irish quarterback Ja- rious Jackson injured his knee while taking a safety in his own end zone in an effort to run out the clock. Jack- son finished the game passing for 276 yards and rushing for an additional 80, but his absence proved costly in the following week's 10-0 loss at USC. 5. SEPT. 12, 1981: NOTRE DAME 27, LSU 9 Faust's debut as a college head coach Quarterback Jarious Jackson accounted for 356 yards of total offense in the 1998 victory versus LSU, but injured his knee while "taking a knee."
