BY TOM LOY Growing up, Indianapolis Warren Central four-star safety Mykelti Wil- liams loved seeing Notre Dame football on television. Every Saturday, he would sit in his living room and watch the Irish play, hoping one day he would get a chance to wear their uniform. Notre Dame had recruited the 6-0, 198-pounder for quite some time. How- ever, the Irish coaching staff didn't have any room for an additional safety from the class of 2015. That all changed Dec. 19. "We talked in the spring, and the staff said they were recruiting me, but the position was closed," Williams said of his conversations with the Notre Dame coaches. "After my senior season, they came in and told me the position at safety is open again, and they are look- ing for safeties. I talked to defensive co- ordinator Brian VanGorder and defen- sive line coach Mike Elston, and they basically interviewed me for the job. "After our talk, they told me I pre- sented myself well and I was the guy they want. They told me they wanted to offer me. I couldn't stop smiling after that. It was a pretty incredible moment. It took me about 30 seconds before I told them right then that I wanted to commit." It was a moment of pure joy for Wil- liams and the culmination of all his hard work. However, it may have meant even more to the Irish coaches and his mother. "They were really excited when I said I wanted to commit," Williams said of VanGorder and Elston. "Christmas came early for both of us. They were really happy. Everyone was shaking hands and there were hugs. It clearly meant a lot to both of us. "That was big for me. It showed me that it wasn't like they expected me to commit, but they were really happy I did. I've been a Notre Dame fan since I was little. It's surreal. Just saying I can go there is amazing.
