M ichigan stood a respectable 11‑5 overall and 3‑2 in the Big Ten in mid‑January, but there was a big discrepancy between home and road performances. The Wolverines had won nine of 10 games at the friendly confines of Crisler Center, while the road was much less welcoming. The Maize and Blue lost each of their first four true road games, with the defeats coming at the hands of Pittsburgh, Notre Dame, Wiscon‑ sin and Rutgers by 21, 20, 10 and 13 points, respectively. Despite struggles away from home, however, the Wol‑ verines have had a few confidence‑ building wins that could propel them on to a successful Big Ten season. U‑M dropped its Big Ten opener 63‑53 at Wisconsin Dec. 28, but fol‑ lowed that up with an 89‑53 blow‑ out of Penn State Jan. 1 and an ego‑ boosting 74‑65 win over then‑No. 24 Michigan State Jan. 4. The Wolverines fell back to .500 in the conference after an 81‑68 loss to Rutgers Jan. 7 in Pis‑ cataway, N.J., but then defeated rival Ohio State 100‑94 in overtime Jan. 11. Through 16 games, senior forward Cyesha Goree was leading the way for the Wolverines. The 6‑3 forward was averaging a double‑double with 14.5 points and 10.6 rebounds per game. Freshman guard Katelynn Flaherty has provided an injection of offensive talent, scoring 14.7 points per game while shooting 44.8 percent (43 of 96) from behind the three‑point line. She started only three of the first 16 games, but was playing 26.8 minutes per game.   WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Strong Showing At Home Keys Solid Start Freshman guard Katelynn Flaherty shot 44.8 percent from three-point range and aver- aged a team-best 14.7 points per game dur- ing U-M's 11-5 start.
