"He kind of looked me in the eye, and said, 'Okay. If that's the way it is, okay.' And so he walked out. He was perturbed." So much so, Hanlon assured, that all pleasantries were dropped, be- yond direct football communication. No, how is your mom? No, what's going on in school? Nothing. Only in the latter part of that sea- son did Harbaugh come back and want to talk to the man who sat in a place of honor at the new coach's introductory press conference. Hanlon recalled: "He came in my office and said, 'I want to talk to you.' He closed the door, and I thought, uh-oh, something is wrong. He sat down and he said, 'I don't like this, Coach. This is not the way it should be. I understand now what you're trying to tell me, and I don't want it to be like this.' "From that day on, we became fairly, fairly close. We have had that same relationship ever since that time sitting down in the office. It was just one of those things where he had to grow up a little bit, and he did. It helped him to become a better coach and understand what goes on be- tween coaches and players." GROWN, BUT NOT STUNTED Harbaugh made sure everyone knows he's not the same guy who left 7 Year bowl drought Harbaugh ended at Stanford, when he led the Cardinal to the Sun Bowl during the 2009 season. 8 Winning seasons turned in by Harbaugh-coached teams dur- ing his 11 years as a head coach with the University of San Di- ego (2004-06), Stanford (2007- 10) and the NFL's San Francisco 49ers (2011-14). 14 Stanford recruits signed by Har- baugh in the 2007-10 classes that have been selected in the NFL Draft.
