BY WHITELAW REID C HAMPIONSHIP-CALIBER teams often wind up having that one player who rises to the occasion and exceeds the expectations that media, fans and opponents alike had for him. Redshirt third-year guard Malcolm Brogdon firmly believes that Virginia has that player in fourth-year forward Darion Atkins. "Honestly, I think he can be the X-factor for us," Brogdon said, "because he can be so active and so overwhelming [on defense]. "And on the offensive end, he can make shots. I think people underestimate his ability to shoot the ball and his ability to finish. He's very talented all- around." X-FACTOR Darion Atkins' Strong Play Has Helped UVa To Its Best Start In Three Decades Through Virginia's first two and a half months of the season, Atkins — playing only 20.8 minutes per contest — was averaging an impressive 7.1 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.1 blocks for a Cavalier team that was off to its best start (17-0) since the days of Ralph Samp- son. Atkins came off the bench in the first two games before supplanting Mike Tobey in the starting lineup. Atkins started six straight games before hurting his back and ribs in a nasty fall in the 76-65 win at Maryland Dec. 3 in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Atkins' injuries forced him to miss Virginia's 74-57 win at Virginia Commonwealth in early December. However, the Clinton, Md., native returned for the Cleveland State game and played well in a reserve role over the next four games. In Virginia's thrilling, 89-80 double-overtime win over Miami Jan. 3 in Coral Gables, Fla., Atkins really rose to the occasion. With redshirt third-year forward Anthony Gill not having one
