2015 RECRUITING ISSUE BY RYAN TICE Indianapolis Ben Davis High School had two weeks to prepare for its 6A state title game against Carmel, which won the regular-season matchup between the two schools 37-14 behind 468 rush- ing yards. Head coach Mike Kirschner's solution to slow his opponent's rushing attack was unconventional — moving All- American linebacker Asmar Bilal from his normal position in the middle of the defense to free safety. The senior had no qualms about lining up in a completely foreign spot for the biggest game of his life because that's the kind of selfless player — and outstanding athlete — he is, according to the mentor. "The first time we played Carmel, they just ran over us," Kirschner recalled. "When they would break through to the secondary, our safeties just weren't making plays. We decided to move him back, thinking if nothing else, he has the ability to run people down. He's 6-3, 210 pounds and unbelievably fast." "They just wanted to put me in the back so I could clean up all the mess," Bilal explained. "It worked out well, and I just did what was best for the team." The coach joked that Bilal's coverage in the passing game was not great, but that wasn't a surprise given the short amount of time he had to prepare.
