UNDER THE DOME Irish student-athletes excelling on the field and in the classroom Bonzie Colson — Basketball The freshman forward emerged Jan. 14 during the absence of junior forward Zach Auguste due to an academic matter. (Auguste returned the following game.) With Notre Dame trail- ing Georgia Tech by 12 points, Colson entered the game and stabilized the frontcourt with 22 solid minutes in the eventual 62-59 win for the Irish. Colson's physical play also helped slow down Duke star freshman Jahlil Okafor in a 77-73 Notre Dame win at Purcell Pavilion Jan. 28. Nick Besler — Soccer The senior midfielder was selected fifth overall by the Port- land Timbers in the Major League Soccer SuperDraft Jan. 15. Besler is the highest draft pick in Irish history, besting the previous high of eighth, which was when Nick's older brother, Matt, was chosen in 2009. As a senior, Besler was named a second-team All-American by the National Soccer Coaches As- sociation of America. The captain played every minute for the defending champions. Vince Hinostroza — Hockey It has been a disappointing season on the ice for Notre Dame (12-14-4 overall and 7-5-4 Hockey East), but the sophomore center continues to be productive for head coach Jeff Jackson's team. In a 5-1 win at Maine Feb. 7, Hinostroza tallied three points for the second consecutive evening. He scored twice and notched four assists in the weekend split. Margaret Bamgbose — Track The junior All-American set Notre Dame and Meyo Invita- tional records in the 400 meters Feb. 7 at South Bend. Bamg- bose's 52.45 time in the 400-meter event marked a school and meet record. Her ranking at the time in Division I earned her a spot in the NCAA Indoor Championships to be held in March. She also helped the victorious 4x400-meter relay set a meet record that had stood since 2002, posting a time of 3:37.20. TOP OF THE CLASS
