UNDER THE DOME ✦ GIMME FIVE Sophomore Malik Zaire's 22 rushing at- tempts and 96 rushing yards in Notre Dame's Music City Bowl victory against LSU Dec. 30 set Fighting Irish bowl records for quarter- backs. The win improved Notre Dame to 5-0 in bowl games in which its quarterback reached at least 50 rushing yards. Zaire also ran for a touchdown against LSU, but the Irish bowl record for most rushing scores in a game is two, shared by Joe Theismann in the 24-11 upset of Texas in the 1971 Cotton Bowl and Joe Montana in the epic 35-34 comeback win over Houston in the 1979 Cotton Bowl. Notre Dame is 3-8 in bowl games in which the starting quarterback finished with mi- nus yards rushing, most recently the 42-14 loss to Alabama in the 2013 BCS National Championship Game when Everett Golson totaled minus-seven yards. The lowest total was minus-49 by freshman Matt LoVecchio in the 41-9 Fiesta Bowl loss to Oregon State in January 2001. Here are the top five rushing totals by Notre Dame quarterbacks in bowl games: Name (Bowl Game) Att.-Yds. Result 1. Malik Zaire (2014) 22-96 W, 31-28 2. Tony Rice (1989) 13-75 W, 34-21 3. Tom Clements (1973) 15-74 W, 24-23 4. Rick Mirer (1993) 13-55 W, 28-3 5. Tony Rice (1990) 14-50 W, 21-6 ESPN VS. NOTRE DAME On Jan. 15, ESPN filed a lawsuit against the University of Notre Dame because the school allegedly failed to comply with the network's open re- cords requests. According to the Associated Press, ESPN requested reports from Notre Dame's campus police on crimes that in- volved student-athletes, though which crimes in question were not released. The lawsuit, per the AP, contends that Notre Dame withheld such police documents involving alleged campus crimes by student-athletes and thereby violated Indiana's open records law. Notre Dame countered that as a private university it is immune from open re- cords laws, but ESPN responded that because the school has its own police department it too has a public law en- forcement agency. Notre Dame spokesman Dennis Brown noted that three previous advi- sory opinions had sided with the school about its police department and those of other private college and universities in the state are not public agencies. "We are confident that our position will be affirmed in court," he said. — Lou Somogyi MOVING? Let our customer service department know your new address! CALL US 1-800-421-7751
