2015 RECRUITING ISSUE BY RYAN TICE Indianapolis Ben Davis High School had two weeks to prepare for its 6A state title game against Carmel, which won the regular-season matchup between the two schools 37-14 behind 468 rush- ing yards. Head coach Mike Kirschner's solution to slow his opponent's rushing attack was unconventional — moving All- American linebacker Asmar Bilal from his normal position in the middle of the defense to free safety. The senior had no qualms about lining up in a completely foreign spot for the biggest game of his life because that's the kind of selfless player — and outstanding athlete — he is, according to the mentor. "The first time we played Carmel, they just ran over us," Kirschner recalled. "When they would break through to the secondary, our safeties just weren't making plays. We decided to move him back, thinking if nothing else, he has the ability to run people down. He's 6-3, 210 pounds and unbelievably fast." "They just wanted to put me in the back so I could clean up all the mess," Bilal explained. "It worked out well, and I just did what was best for the team." The coach joked that Bilal's coverage in the passing game was not great, but that wasn't a surprise given the short amount of time he had to prepare. The quick transition was a smooth one AsmAr BilAl CAn And Will do WhAtever is needed BGI FILM ANALYSIS: ASMAR BILAL Strengths Has a quick first step and an explosive overall style of play … He's light on his feet, fast, athletic and agile … He's smooth in coverage, and he can get sideline to sideline with ease … He plays the game with passion and intensity, and packs a punch when he hits defenders … He's a smart, heady ballplayer … His high school head coach praised his overall knowledge of the game … Is a very instinctive player. Areas For Improvement Bilal will need to continue adding mass to his lean frame … Tends to try to lay the big hit too often instead of wrapping up … Thud tackles often, which allows some ball carriers to bounce off and stay upright … Needs to improve his hands … Drops a few interceptions when the opportunity arises. Bilal helped lead Indianapolis Ben Davis to the 6A state title, amassing 155 tackles, six stops for loss, five sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and one interception.
