2015 RECRUITING ISSUE BY ANDREW IVINS Equanimeous St. Brown didn't want to play the hat game on National Sign- ing Day. The Anaheim (Calif.) Servite High wide receiver said it would be a little too bland for him to just pick one hat and put it on. That's why when it was time to finally announce his college choice he decided to throw a twist on the decade-old ritual. In what is believed to be a college football recruiting first, St. Brown an- nounced that he would be playing football at Notre Dame by giving a pledge to the Irish in three different languages. With the ESPNU cameras rolling and a national audience watching, St. Brown committed to Notre Dame and head coach Brian Kelly by speak- ing in German, French and English. The announcement ceremony was very unique for an 18-year-old high school senior, but if you know any- thing about St. Brown and his past, you know that it was par for the course. The 6-5, 205-pound St. Brown is re- garded by many in the football recruit- ing industry as a one-of-a-kind talent. He is also a one-of-kind talent off the field. That's what made the trilingual commitment possible. "A lot of people said they knew I could speak all these different lan- guages, but none of them had re- ally seen me do it," St. Brown said. "I just wanted to show them that I could speak all of the languages, and I thought why not do it then. I talked it over with my parents, and they thought it was a good idea, so I just went with it." St. Brown — whose first name Equa- nimeous is derived from the word equanimity, which is defined as calm under pressure — has been preparing for the future almost his entire life.
