J O H N A R E N A , C O L U M B U S , O H I O | B T N / B T N P L U S The Lions have won the past four Big Ten tournaments, but they still have a long way to go to catch up to Iowa. The Hawkeyes have won the tourney 34 times in their illustrious history, and they'll be out to knock Penn State o5 its throne at Ohio State. The Hawks have already defeated Penn State in dual-meet action this year, clinching a share of the league's regular-season championship in the process. Penn State has also lost duals to Minnesota and Ohio State, but the Lions have kept things close, and even with several of their top performers redshirting this year, it would be unwise to count them out. SCORECARD weakside defensive end nationally, while Miller was rated 20th at the po- sition. Ohio State landed the best group of defensive ends in the country. Jason Cornell of St. Paul, Minn., was Rivals' eighth-ranked strongside end, and the Buckeyes also landed Rivals' 14th- ranked strongside end in Dre'Mont Jones of Cleveland and two others. Buchholz (17th at strongside DE), Miller (20th at weakside DE), Carter (Rivals' 11th-ranked athlete) and Givens (a three-star linebacker) give Penn State what may be the Big Ten's second-best DE class. LINEBACKER SIGNEES Manny Bowen, Jake Cooper, Daiquan Kelly OUTLOOK Ohio State landed the Big Ten's best linebacker class, a group headed by Rivals' No. 3 inside line- backer, Justin Hilliard of Cincinnati, its No. 8 inside linebacker, Nick Conner of Dublin, Ohio, and its No. 5 outside linebacker, Jerome Baker of Cleveland. Penn State landed the league's sec- ond-best class. Bowen is ranked by Rivals as the 24th-best outside line- backer in the country, while Cooper is a solid three-star prospect. Kelly, who will be a Sam outside linebacker at Penn State, was ranked by Rivals as the 17th-best athlete in the country. DEFENSIVE BACK SIGNEES Jarvis Miller, Ayron Mon- roe, John Petrishen, John Reid, Gar- rett Taylor. OUTLOOK I don't think there is any question Penn State signed the best class of defensive backs in the Big Ten. Taylor and Reid give the Lions the league's best pair of cornerbacks, and it's possible that both will play as freshmen this fall, just as Grant Haley and Christian Campbell did last year. Miller, Monroe and Petrishen are all solid three-star safeties, with Miller having totaled six interceptions last season while rushing for more than 1,700 yards on o5ense. ■ CORNER FROM PAGE 13
