INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS "We don't have that type of roster that's going to blow people away. We're going to be in this every single game, and part of our issue is the late- game adjustments that we have to make in a game. "We haven't been able to work at those as much because we're still try- ing to dribble the ball and catch the ball on two feet and shoot the ball with good spin and the fundamen- tals of the game. All these young kids shouldn't be in these situations and they're forced to be, and we have to get better at it." — Michigan head bas- ketball coach John Beilein after U-M's 64-52 overtime loss at Illinois Feb. 12, the Wolverines' fourth straight setback without guards Caris LeVert and Derrick Walton in the lineup MAIZE AND BLUE NOTEBOOK UNDERCLASSMEN SHINE FOR WOMEN'S GYMNASTICS Michigan's women's gymnastics team is tearing up the competition as usual as a top-five team nationally, and getting substantial help from younger performers. Sophomore Nicole Artz and freshman Brianna Brown recently demonstrated the Wolverines' prowess throughout class levels. Artz and Brown were respectively named Big Ten Gymnast of the Week and Freshman of the Week Feb. 2, after setting a number of career highs in Michigan's 197.300-195.875 win over No. 7 Nebraska Jan. 31. Artz won the all-around with a career-best 39.600, including a career-best floor exercise score of 9.975. Brown won the uneven bars (9.900), and took third in the all-around (39.450) and the floor exercise (9.900). All three scores represented career bests for the rookie. Those two and Michigan senior Sachi Sugiyama were ranked in the top 10 in the nation in the all-around as of mid-February. MEN'S GYMNASTICS TEAM CELEBRATES IN STYLE The reigning national champions in men's gymnastics unveiled their 2014 title banner at Cliff Keen Arena Feb. 7. Then head coach Kurt Golder's Wolverines made it very clear they're not living in the past one bit. The No. 5-ranked Wolverines went out and knocked off No. 2 Stanford, 433.900- 432.650, in front of an appreciative crowd of 1,241 fans. Michigan set season highs in floor exercise, rings and high bar. U-M senior Stacey Ervin won the floor exercise with a score of 15.80. Sophomore Anthony Stefanelli lurked right behind at 14.95, taking third to go with his first- place tie on vault. The Wolverines locked up the victory with a 14.85 score on the high bar by fresh- man Dmitri Belanovski. The rookie also wound up second in the all-around, posting a career-best 85.05.
