2015 RECRUITING ISSUE coach who reached out to me. "Ever since Coach Hoke got fired, I pretty much said to a lot of the guys: 'Michigan is still Michigan. No matter who the coach is, it's always going to be one of the best football colleges in the country. There's a se- lect few colleges that can say that no matter who they have around the team.' I told them that they can be part of something special, being known as some of the guys to try and bring back Michigan football." D e s p i t e t h e t u r m o i l , t h i n g s couldn't have worked out much better for Malzone, and fellow in- coming quarterback Zach Gentry. Jim Harbaugh — a former U-M sig- nal-caller himself — has developed a reputation as a quarterbacks guru during his time as a head coach, especially at Stanford, where he tu- tored All-American Andrew Luck, who is now starring with the India- napolis Colts. According to Brother Rice head coach Dave Sofran, the two have a shared experience as winners. "Alex definitely was a great competitor and always wanted to improve his game," Sofran noted. "He's just a winner — I think he was 23-1 as a starter. I think that says a lot about him, he wants to compete, and Harbaugh will want people like that in his program." With Harbaugh in town — and Malzone one of two early enrollees, along with fellow in-state recruit Brian Cole — the 6-2, 205-pounder will have his chance to make an early impact on the field at the school he grew up rooting for every Saturday (more often than not, in Michigan Stadium along with his father Pat, a season ticket-holder). Despite the process not following his script, it worked out perfectly in the end for Malzone. — Tim Sullivan PERSONAL Alexander James Malzone was born Oct. 10, 1996, in Detroit … Older brother, Nick, attends Michigan … Will be joined in Ann Arbor by fel- low 2015 Brother Rice teammates Jack Dunaway (preferred walk-on de- fensive end) and Grant Perry (wide receiver) … Will join a long tradition of Brother Rice standouts to become Wolverines, most recently long snap- per Jareth Glanda (2010-13) … En- rolled early at Michigan and will go through spring practice.
