A three-star prospect from Altoona, Pa., Givens had originally committed to Paul Chryst and his coaching sta/ in February 2014. But a0er Chryst le0 to become head coach at Wisconsin, Penn State's James Franklin saw Givens as an excellent prospect to .ll one of its .nal scholarships in the Class of 2015. "Basically, they told me that if I switch, they'll o/er me," Givens said. "That was, I believe, two days before signing day. So I told them I'd think about it. It was a real tough decision. I literally couldn't think about anything else. I couldn't focus on anything else. "I ended up talking to my mom and my coach about it. I slept on it, too, and when it came time to make a decision, I was ready to make the switch. I always told myself that if Penn State o/ered, you have to take it. So that's what I did." Growing up in central Pennsylvania, Givens root- ed for both the Panthers and Nittany Lions. Altoona High head coach John Franco said he believes Givens would have most likely stuck with his orig- inal commitment if he hadn't been forced to build a relationship from scratch with new Panthers coach Pat Nar- duzzi and his sta/. "If Chryst would have stayed at Pitt, I don't think he would have switched," Franco said. "But when that all happened, I think he became a bit uncomfortable with everything. He really liked Coach Narduzzi and the assistants that he spoke with, but they only had a little bit of time to get to know each other. "Meanwhile, Coach Franklin and his coaches were in touch periodically throughout his season, so he already had a good relationship with them."
