his is not the way D.J. Newbill's Penn State career was supposed to end. Before even lacing up his sneakers for the &rst time this season, he had already cemented his legacy as one of the Nittany Lions' all-time greats. In fact, he had thrust himself into the argument for best ever. Newbill went on to lead the Big Ten in scoring for the second season in a row, and in the process he rose to No. 4 on Penn State's all-time list, a spot he occu- pies despite playing only three seasons for the Nittany Lions a'er transferring from Southern Mississippi. With so many accomplishments to point to, Newbill's place in the school's basketball history is assured. And for what? Three seasons without a Penn State breakthrough. Ninety-&ve games played, 95 games started, and the only postseason invitation the Lions had received heading MAKING HIS STAND OUT WITH A BANG Newbill continued to shine even with the team struggling, averaging a Big Ten- best 21.1 points per game.
