MICHIGAN BASKETBALL Junior guard Spike Albrecht played an exceptional game, tossing in 16 points, with five assists and four rebounds. Sophomore forward Zak Irvin added 15 points, plus seven rebounds and four assists. Those two jump-started the Wol- verines in a runaway first half. Michigan got out of the gate by sprinting to a 31-11 advantage and led 39-23 at the half. The Buckeyes ran off 14 unanswered points in the second half to pull within three, 49-46. But a huge baseline three-pointer by Irvin helped seal the deal against an archrival, the Wolverines hanging on to win. Worst Loss — 82-78 in double overtime at Northwestern, March 3: U-M suffered an absolutely crushing loss in Evanston, leading by six with 2:50 re- maining in regulation and three with just seconds remaining. But Northwest- ern's Tre Demps nailed a three-pointer to send it into overtime. In the first overtime period, Michigan rallied from five down to take a three- point lead on a three-pointer by freshman forward Aubrey Dawkins with 1:03 remaining. Free throws by Albrecht made it 71-65 with just 16 seconds left. But two more Demps three-pointers — sandwiched around a crucial Michi- gan turnover — shockingly sent the game into double overtime. In the final extra period, the Wolverines couldn't keep pace, losing a game they'd led most of the way, including by 12 in regulation. That meant a career-high 28 points by Irvin and 21 by Dawkins went for naught, leaving U-M devastated. Junior guard Spike Albrecht compiled 16 points, five assists and four rebounds to lead U-M to a 64-57 triumph over Ohio State Feb. 22. PHOTO BY PER KJELDSEN
