M . | A P R I L 1 8 | B E A V E R S T A D I U M | B T N It's not as if fans needed another reason to pile into the car and head to the ol' alma mater on Penn State's uno5cial spring reunion weekend. But just in case... the Lions are looking to tweak the format a bit this year by staging a kicking competition before the game and a punting competition at hal6ime. Both starting spots are up for grabs, and coach James Franklin is eager to see how his specialists fare with the eyes of Nit- tany Nation trained on them. Beaver Stadium won't be rocking as hard as it will be on Sept. 12 when Bu4alo visits for Penn State's home opener, but if the weather cooper- ates, the Lions 3gure to have somewhere in the vicinity of 70,000 fans on hand – enough to make this one of the most popular spring games in the country. ADMINISTRATION Penn State realigns athletics department Penn State is restructuring its ath- letics department to "better position the Nittany Lions' broad-based pro- gram and 850 student-athletes for the future" according to a statement issued by the university in March. The reorganization of Intercolle- giate Athletics introduces a more vertical structure that will "encour- age communication and collabora- tion across business units and sports," according to the statement. As part of the initiative, four admin- istrative divisions have been formed: business and finance; student-ath- lete performance, health and welfare; internal and external operations; and administration. The new structure is aimed at en- hancing sport performance and stu- dent-athlete welfare by moving all people responsible for those func- tions into one division. Other moves were made with an eye toward im- proving efficiency. Athletics director Sandy Barbour began the department's reorganiza- tion in October by naming Phil Esten as deputy AD and chief operating of- ficer. Last month, another key mem- ber of Barbour's senior leadership team was announced with the ap- pointment of Lynn Holleran as senior associate athletic director for admin- istration. Among the members of the Penn State staff who have been promoted in the reorganization are associate athletic directors Charmelle Green and Rick Kaluza. Green has been named senior associate AD for stu- dent-athlete performance, health and welfare and senior woman ad- ministrator. Kaluza was named senior associate AD for finance and business operations. Esten, Green, Holleran and Kaluza will report directly to Barbour and form the leadership team in the new structure. ■ SCORECARD
