• Became a baseball season-ticket holder this year. "I'm really proud of the group of student-ath- letes we have at Virginia, how they behave during games and how they come across during postgame interviews," said McQuade, whose wife, Susan, is also a Virginia graduate. They have a 9-year-old son, Trent, and a 6-year-old daughter, Macy. "I feel our student-athletes truly are student- athletes, and it gives me great satisfaction to know these students are there for more than just sports," he added. "Off the court or field, they seem to do wonderfully in all areas. That's encouraged me to participate as a VAF donor, plus the fact we com- pete for national championships in many sports." McQuade also derives great satisfaction from his young son, Trent, who has become an ardent fan of Virginia sports. "For football games, we drive two hours and spend an evening in a hotel," McQuade said. "Af- ter one night game, we drove to Waynesboro. We pulled into the parking lot and there was a huge Ohio State bus. Trent said that was their field hockey team. I asked him how he knew that and he said, 'We play them in field hockey tomorrow morning.' "Sure enough, he was right. He also noted, 'We're ranked No. 3 in field hockey.' Trent keeps up with all Virginia sports and goes on Virginia- Sports.com every day to check results and watch highlights." If Virginia coaches had their way Trent Mc- Quade would attend every UVa home game. "Trent considers himself a good luck charm for basketball," the elder McQuade said. "He's been to over 20 basketball games during the last two sea- sons and we've only lost once, to Duke this year. "As a dad, last year being with Trent when we beat Syracuse in Charlottesville to win the ACC basketball championship was a great feeling." McQuade believes UVa sports reflect the Uni- versity's outstanding reputation. "I think over the years we've demonstrated a high level of integrity and at the same time been very competitive nationally," he said. McQuade feels it's important that the athletic programs have the resources they need to continue to compete at the national level and attract the quality of student-athletes "we desire at Virginia." — Mike Scandura The McQuade family, clockwise from top left: Susan, Doug, Trent and Macy.
