CAVS FOR LIFE SPOTLIGHT: COURTNEY SWAN Courtney Swan, fourth-year women's lacrosse player, has continued to make an impact both on and off of the playing field. The midfielder is second in the ACC in assists per game and was second-team All- ACC last year, helping her team earn a 2014 Final Four appearance. She was also the recipient of the Elite 89 award, presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA at the NCAA cham- pionship. Swan has proven herself not only as a student and athlete but also as a fundraiser. Swan is a fourth-year class trustee and part of a committee that focuses on the fourth-year class giving. "We try to encourage as much participation as we can from fourth-year students, asking them to give back to any part of the Uni- versity they find most meaningful to them. We're trying to start that culture of giving early," she said. Swan is also a Student-Athlete Mentor (SAM), which is a group of student-athletes that discuss topics affecting the student-athlete community. In turn, they relay this information back to their teammates. Swan also participates in the ACE program (Athletes Committed to Education) where she works with children at Hollymead Elementary School. The Kinesiology major hopes to attend medical school after graduation and has been shadowing multiple doctors to gain a feel for which area of medicine interests her. "I have been shadowing Dr. Bobby Chhabra at the UVa hand center and I have gotten to shadow a few different doctors in other fields," Swan said. Swan will apply to medical school and hopes to do research at the UVa Health System during her bridge year next year. Swan has made her fourth-year class gift to the Virginia Athletics Foundation. Explaining why it is so important to her to give back, she notes, "After these four years I have realized how great my time at UVa has been and that it was all made possible because I received a scholarship from donors who have made my dream come true. I have loved every part of my experience and I think it's important to give back and show others the kind of impact you can make." MEN'S AND WOMEN'S BASKETBALL REUNIONS The men's and women's basketball programs held their annual reunions in February. The men's basketball alumni returned on Valentine's Day to watch the men's team defeat Wake Forest 61-60. Coach Bennett and his staff at- tended the post-game reception to thank the alumni for their loyal support and share insight into their successful 2014-15 season. The women's basketball alumnae returned to Charlottesville the weekend of Feb. 21-22. There were several oppor- tunities to engage with the team and coaching staff at the Open Practice and Alumni Shoot Around. The weekend was highlighted by the current team's 73-59 victory over Virginia Tech. By attending reunions and athletic competitions, student-athlete alumni show their support of current teams. We hope to see many more student-athlete alumni at future reunions.
