Efficient is the adjective that best describes Virginia reliever Kevin Doherty. A third-year right-hander from Laytonsville, Md., Doherty has been a reliever since his first-year season. Through this year's NCAA Tournament regionals, Doherty had compiled a career record of 3-1 with three saves plus a 3.25 ERA. In 59 2 ⁄3 total innings, Doherty had allowed a mere 36 hits, along with 17 walks and 46 strikeouts. Even more impressive was the fact he'd posted a .174 op- ponents' batting average. My advice to student-athletes is: Be diligent on a daily basis. Whether it's sports or academics, it's easy to get be- hind on things, especially in the classroom. The primary challenge facing student-athletes today is: Definitely time management. Having enough time to get in my schoolwork and doing things aside from school is very difficult for a student-athlete. The best thing about UVa is: The people. You can meet such a broad range of students from different and diverse backgrounds. You find o u t w h a t m o t i v a t e s them. That makes it cool to be around such peo - ple at UVa. Why I chose UVa: I chose UVa because it was by far the best aca- demic school and best baseball school. I felt it would best serve me in the future in terms of what type of job I would seek. What's been the most challenging aspect of baseball since you've been at UVa: My first two years, in terms of not getting the number of op- portunities or playing time I had hoped to get. Sticking with it while knowing I can contribute, and seeing my roommates and friends play while I was a minor influence, and maintain- ing confidence was pretty challenging. The highlight of my athletic career: My highlight was go- ing to Omaha last year and the run we had. We didn't do too well in the ACCs, but had a great regional. Playing baseball out there with 30 of your best friends was pretty cool. The most important thing I've learned from baseball: Never give up. Things won't always go your way in baseball. Keep up your confidence, and things will fall your way. My dream vacation would be: The Bahamas. I've heard great things about the beaches. I'd go to the beach and not do a thing.
