wahoo nation LARRY ARRINGTON For Larry Arrington, it all started as a boy in the cow pastures outside Lynchburg, Va. "We used to play tag football, and part of us would be VPI and part of us would be UVa. It was knock down, drag out even for us kids," described the 71-year-old Wahoo fan. "It was just something about the Cavalier that turned me on," he added. "I remember seeing highlights on the black and white television." Arrington has been with them through thick and thin ever since, remembering some of the greatest wins and one of the biggest plays in Cavalier football history. "I was there when we beat Clemson, and the Florida State game — I will never forget that," Arrington said. "Anthony Poindexter made that final stop. He went to Jef- ferson Forest High School, and I watched him play locally." Arrington graduated high school from New London Academy and took classes at Lynchburg College, but ended up with more credits from the University of Virginia through the local extension. His wife of 47 years, Betty, whom he met on a blind have up to 25 people at our tailgate," Arrington ex- plained. "He has two boys that graduated from UVa also. It is really a highlight for some of those kids to come and bring their children. It is a real gala type of thing. Good, clean fun. "We have gotten to know a lot of people in Lower West." Arrington worked at General Electric for 11 years before ultimately starting an appliance business, Ed Hawkins Inc., in February 1968 with his father in law. He still works there to this day. These days, this Cavalier fan could not be more pleased with the UVa coaches and administration. "I certainly do like the way that Tony Bennett has come along with his scheme, the defensive strat- egy, and Brian O'Conner and the baseball program speaks for itself. "Mike London is an outstanding individual. Who Arrington and his wife, Betty, started attending UVa football games faith- fully in the early '70s, and have turned pregame tailgating into a date, received her master's degree from the University of Virginia, and their love for the Cavaliers has become quite the family affair as his brother Barry is also an avid fan. The quality of play- ers he is recruiting. I agree with everything they are doing. "[Athletics director] Craig Littlepage, you have to like what he has done; I have a lot of respect for him." Now a full-fledged member of Wahoo Nation, Ar- rington started attending games faithfully in the early '70s thanks to Dr. John Rischer, who encouraged him to contribute to the program. His father died in 2008 at 100 years old, and his mother lived to be 97. With and one with a degree in English, the Arrington family football tailgate has turned in to quite an event over the years.
