E vent Recaps Marino Tees it Up for UVa Golf Professional golfer and former Cavalier Steve Marino ('02) was the special guest at the first annual Tee it Up event on Nov. 18-19, 2011. Marino met participants at the South Street Brewery on Friday and then played in an 18-hole shotgun tournament at Birdwood the following day. Teams were made up of do- nors, alumni, and UVa golf team members. The winning team of Eli Barnes (UVa golf '03), Mike Mitchell (UVa golf '01), Richard Wampler (UVa golf '05), John McAllister (UVa alum '98 and VAF donor) and Marino shot 127. Proximity prize winners were Shivin Kwatra (UVa golf '02) — Closest to the Pin #4 — and Rick Lareau (friend of the program) — Closest to the Pin #12 and Wampler-Longest Drive #10. The event benefitted the UVa men's and women's golf programs. We encourage all golf enthusiasts to join us for next year's event so please stay tuned for 2012 tournament details. Cavalier Fans Flock to Atlanta for Bowl Game Wahoo fans flocked to Atlanta for the Chick-fil-A Bowl and took part in a host of activities in the days leading up to the game on Dec. 31. In ad- dition to the football game that featured Virginia versus Auburn, the bowl festivities included Fan Fest, a parade and a night at the Atlanta Aquarium. In addition, there were events specifically for UVa fans and alumni. The UVa Club of Atlanta held a Wahoo Welcome and the Virginia Athletics Foundation welcomed UVa football alumni for a special gathering at the team hotel. The Cavalier Countdown Tailgate prior to the game was cohosted by the Foundation and the UVa Club of Atlanta. The tailgate held at the Georgia World Congress Center featured a deejay, barbecue menu, the UVa cheerlead- ers and Cavman. UVa President Teresa Sullivan and UVa athletics direc- tor Craig Littlepage led the crowd with pre-game pep talks and cheers. More than 14,000 tickets were sold for the game and approximately 1,500 UVa fans stayed at the Marriott Marquis, the team hotel. VAF would like to thank all the fans who traveled to the game to sup- port the Hoos. Like us on Facebook www.facebook.com/VirginiaAthleticsFoundation FEBRUARY 2012 ◆ 5
