T H E M O N T H I N . . . Meredith, whose retirement is effective Tuesday, doesn't have big plans for the days, months and years ahead. "Just to enjoy life, play a little golf and enjoy Penn State," he said. "It's been a labor of love. The community and the athletics have been a big part of my life." And during the last 50 years, Bud Meredith made both a better place. NEIL RUDEL ALTOONA MIRROR [Connecticut transfer Terrence] Samuel represents the continuation of two big- guard trends under Chambers, one positive, one negative: He defends his butt off but can't shoot from distance. Samuel is not just sizable for a true backcourt player (202 pounds) but quick for his size. He is not easy to knock off the ball, gets to spots and owns them. But, in two college seasons, Samuel still has not made a 3-point shot (0-of-18, all but one of those attempts as a sophomore last season). That's a problem. DAVID JONES PENNLIVE.COM Hiring Jim Haslett as a consultant for the Penn State football team makes a lot of sense for coach James Franklin – as it does for Haslett himself. And, likely, doesn't cost many dollars. At least not for Penn State. But the real bottom line is that it is a win-win situation for both sides. MIKE POORMAN STATECOLLEGE.COM Relentless effort... faith in each other and play for the guy next to you! That's how you build a pack. #wilddogs SEAN SPENCER @SpenceChaos No OL meal is complete without Hellman's... even breakfast. #Mayonnaise- Lifestyle HERB HAND @CoachHand T W E E T S O P I N I O N S PLANNING INITIATIVE ANNOUNCED Penn State launched a wide-ranging strategic planning project in June to help determine strategies and priorities for the years 2016-20 and beyond. Penn State Athletics has partnered with The Napa Group, a California-based organi- zational design firm, to facilitate the planning process. Athletic director Sandy Barbour will appoint a steering committee to oversee the initiative and maintain frequent communication with The Napa Group throughout the process, which is expected to be com- plete by the end of this year. The Napa Group previously worked with Califor- nia, Georgetown, Lehigh, Oregon State, St. Joseph's, Stanford, Tennessee, UCLA and William & Mary. MEREDITH RETIRES William "Bud" Meredith retired on June 30 after nearly 50 years as a member of the Penn State Athletics staff. The Nittany Lions' di- rector of ticketing operations, Meredith oversaw the tremendous growth of tick- et sales for numerous Penn State sports. During his Penn State career, which be- gan in 1967, Beaver Stadium underwent seven expansion projects that trans- formed it into the nation's second- largest facility, with crowds reaching 107,000 or more on a regular basis. "It's been a labor of love," Meredith said. "I have a lot of great memories." WEAVER MOURNED Jim Weaver, a former Penn State football player and assistant coach who went on to become athletic director at Virginia Tech, died July 2 in Blacksburg, Va. He was 70. A Harrisburg, Pa., native and 1967 gradu- ate of Penn State, Weaver played center and linebacker under Rip Engle and Joe Paterno, then assisted the coaching staff for two seasons while earning a master's degree in education. Weaver earned a full-time coaching position in 1969 as the Nittany Lions' interior offensive line assistant before leaving in 1973 for Iowa State and later moving into administra- tion. He was Virginia Tech's athletic di- rector from 1997-2013. ■ N O T E W O R T H Y PSUtixman@gmail.com www.PSUtixman.com Get your PSU Football Tickets at go t ti cke t s? k c i t t t e k man@g .PSUtixm www. at ootba Get yo k c i t t o gm .PSUtixman.com all ur s t s e k
