Father Ryan * As of July 10 The Nittany Lions did make the cut when he announced his top 10 in May, but most observers believe he is primari- ly focused on two other Big Ten schools: Michigan and Maryland. Davis visited Michigan in April, and his parents were said to be very impressed. As for the Terps, Davis has been taking visits to College Park for years now, so he and his family feel comfortable with the sta2 and campus. In addition, a few of his current high school teammates are com- mitted to Maryland. Davis was planning to visit Georgia on July 18, so he was not expected to be on hand for the Lasch Bash. He also picked up o2ers from Florida and Ohio State in the past six weeks, so those two schools could emerge as contenders. If he visits Penn State for a game this season, we may change our opinion, but at present, the Nittany Lions appear to be on the outside looking in. LUCAS NIANG OL // 6-5 // 295 New Canaan, Conn. New Canaan High OFFERS Auburn, Connecticut, Ken- tucky, Massachusetts, Miami, Mississip- pi State, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Syracuse, TCU, Virginia, Virginia Tech QUOTABLE "I just have a lot of visits still to do. My parents care a lot about my education, so I have to 1nd out a lot about academics." OUTLOOK Niang picked up solid o2ers in May from TCU, Mississippi State and, most notably, Auburn. He's never been in a hurry to make a commitment, and the arrival of those three o2ers may have slowed down his recruitment even more, as he continues to indicate that he wants to see which other top programs extend scholarship o2ers. One of the schools he is eyeing is Oregon, and he's planning to take an uno3cial visit to Eugene in late July. He's spoken very highly of the Ducks, so they could become major players if the sta2 extends an o2er. Niang was expected to return to Uni- versity Park on July 18 for the Lasch Bash. Penn State was the 1rst school to extend an o2er to Niang, having done so in February, and he's been talking to multiple members of the coaching sta2 on a weekly basis. So from a relationship perspective, Penn State is a strong con- tender. He's expected to narrow down his list once his season gets started, but he's very interested in some of the na- tion's elite programs, so we don't expect him to make any sudden moves. ■
