hoo's hot Recognizing the "Who's Hoo" in UVa athletics — Cava- lier student-athletes, past, present and future who are making news around the world of sports. Morgan Brian ◆ Soccer The rookie became the first Cavalier to earn Soccer America National Fresh- man of the Year honors and was also named a second-team MVP by the publication. Brian, a first-team National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-American, recorded 11 goals and eight assists en route to ACC Freshman of the Year and All-ACC laurels. The native of St. Simons Island, Ga., also was one of 15 national semifinalists for the Hermann Trophy, an- nually given to the nation's top player, after helping the Cavs reach the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tourna- ment. Meredith Cavalier ◆ Swimming The third-year was named the ACC Performer of the Week Dec. 6 for an outstanding outing at the Georgia In- vitational, which took place from Dec. 2-4. The Stafford, Va., native set ca- reer bests in all three of her individ- ual events and each time also placed among the Cavaliers' all-time top-10 best. She won the 200 backstroke with the program's sec- ond-fastest time, while she also recorded the school's third-fastest 100 backstroke and ninth-fastest 50 free- style. Both backstroke times stood as the ACC's fastest at the time and all three results are NCAA 'B' standards. She was also a part of four relays, and all four teams notched NCAA 'B' cuts. Hunter Jumper ◆ Soccer The defender from Plano, Texas, was selected 28th 10 ◆ CAVALIER CORNER overall by the Chicago Fire in the sec- ond round of the Major League Soc- cer SuperDraft. He started 15 of his 17 games this year at left back, scoring a pair of goals and adding four assists, and finished his UVa career with 79 starts. He was a 2011 NSCAA second-team all-region selection, was named to Capital One Academic All- District First Team and earned a spot on the ACC All- Tournament Team for the third straight year. He becomes the 43rd former Cavalier to move on to play in MLS. UVa ranks second to UCLA in producing the most MLS players all time. Nick Nelson ◆ Wrestling The native of Pittsburgh helped lead the Cavaliers to a sixth-place finish at the pres- tigious Southern Scuffle with a team-best third-place finish at 141 pounds. The tour- nament helped bump the fifth-year up to No. 10 in the national rankings. His only loss at the tournament was to No. 5 Mike Mangrum of Oregon State in the semifinals. He boasted a 17-2 record as of mid-January and was the high- est of the four Wahoos in Intermat's national rankings. Austin Pasztor ◆ Football The All-ACC selection was a crucial part of the Cavaliers' offensive line that started the same five players in every game for the first time since 2004. The consistency up front helped Virginia record 1,984 rushing yards, their best total since ac- cumulating 2,914 in 2004. The 6-7, 305-pound fourth-year also became the first UVa player to earn a nod on the Associated Press All-America team since 2008. The Langton, Ont., product earned a second-team honor after allowing zero sacks and two quarterback hurries in 846 offensive plays. FEBRUARY 2012
