Mr. Jefferson's University beckoned me in 1975. Its
glorious classical architecture, rich history and deep-
rooted traditions attracted this Texan to Charlottesville.
I treasured the Honor Code. I was excited to be part of
the women's tennis team and, a year later, the cross
country team. I helped establish our Kappa Delta soror-
ity. I had friends who encouraged me, professors who
challenged me and coaches who inspired me. Life was
good at UVa!
Even though I was armed and dangerous with a
double major in communications and Spanish at grad-
uation, I was equipped with something much more
powerful: a confidence that I knew I had what it took
to excel. UVa taught me well. Rigorous in its academ-
ics, UVa provided me with knowledge, wisdom and
discernment. As importantly, the University invigorated
me to pursue my dreams and to never look back. While
my professors and coaches were remarkable teachers
in the classrooms and on the playing fields, they mo-
tivated me to begin the process of mastering the skill
