M . | S E P T . 5 | R E C H A L L | B T N The second match of the Big Ten/Pac-12 Challenge (Penn State faces Colorado in the opener on Sept. 4) will feature one of the season's most eagerly anticipated show- downs: a rematch with the always powerful Cardinal. Last September, Penn State suf- fered a :ve-set loss in Palo Alto, but it avenged that defeat in December, thumping the top-ranked Cardinal, 3-1, in the semi:nals of the NCAA tournament. Stanford should be formidable again in 2015, with 10 players returning, including AVCA All-Ameri- cans Inky Ajanaku, Madi Bugg, Jordan Burgess and Merete Lutz. Penn State must re- place AVCA Player of the Year Micha Hancock, as well as :rst-team All-American Nia Grant, but it returns Megan Courtney, MVP of the NCAA championships, All-Ameri- can Aiyana Whitney and a group of impressive young players headlined by sopho- mores Ali Frantti and Haleigh Washington. Should be a fun night in Rec Hall. ACADEMICS Eight PSU athletes post perfect GPAs Nearly 70 Penn State student-ath- letes received Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Awards during the 2014-15 academic year, the university an- nounced in July. The total of 69 is the school's second-highest, just shy of last year's record total of 73. Eight of the 69 Nittany Lion stu- dent-athletes posted perfect 4.0 grade point averages this past year: Kevin Montminy (men's basketball), Kathleen Rodden (women's cross country/track and field), Shane Stewart (men's golf), Ellen Ceresko (women's golf), Dani Lazo (women's lacrosse), Abby Smucker (women's lacrosse), Megan Siverling (women's swimming and diving) and Melissa Minnitti (women's tennis). Also among Penn State's Distin- guished Scholars were two members of the NCAA champion women's vol- leyball team – Carley Muller and Kendall Pierce – as well as wrestler Matt Brown, the CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year and NCAA champ at 174 pounds. Academic All- Americans Laura Gebhart (field hockey) and Robby Creese (men's cross country/track and field) also earned Distinguished Scholar notice. The women's swimming and diving team topped the Penn State list, with eight honorees. Women's lacrosse had seven Big Ten Distinguished Scholars, while field hockey had six. The Big Ten Distinguished Scholar Award is presented to student-ath- letes who have recorded a minimum GPA of 3.7 or higher during the previ- ous academic year. In a recent NCAA study, Penn State student-athletes at the University Park campus earned a Graduation Success Rate of 89 percent compared to the 82 percent average for all Divi- sion I institutions. The 89 percent figure ranked second in the Big Ten, trailing only Northwestern. ■ SCORECARD
