"I've never seen his head spin," the
coach said. "I've never seen that from
him. He's not one of those types of
youngsters. He has a tight grip on his
mind. He's very sharp, very focused.
I've never seen him unconfident."
That mindset might just remind
Harbaugh of himself, whether in
playing or coaching days. Peppers
himself drew the attitudinal connec-
tion between the two as competitors,
and the mentor welcomed it.
"He said that?" Harbaugh asked.
"I think that's a compliment. I would
echo that."
Peppers missed most of his rookie
season with a knee injury, after com-
ing off a sterling high school career
in New Jersey. Playing for Paramus
Catholic High School as a junior and
senior, Peppers wound up with 134
career tackles, seven interceptions
and two sacks among five tackles for
loss on defense.
He also demonstrated plenty of
ability on the offensive side as well.
He caught 57 passes for 842 yards
and 17 touchdowns, while he carried
the football 373 times for 3,059 yards
and 43 touchdowns.
USA Today cast him as its 2013 All-
USA Defensive Player of the Year in
the prep ranks. While his collegiate
career began slowly, it's about to pick
up steam.
Peppers could be the perfect sea-
soning to a defense with some tal-
ent and experience, but one that has
lacked a playmaking spark. Defen-
sive contributions, though, might
only scratch the surface for what
No. 5 can bring to the Wolverines.
He'll have the ball in his hands both
on offense and special teams, pro-
viding him with plenty of oppor-
tunity.
