have the ability to make plays as well. Then the oAensive line. You know that we've all talked about that a great deal. I think it is built on their foundation that they laid in the bowl game, which they were really scrappy in that game and fought to End ways to allow the oAense and Christian to have some success and we saw how that worked out. So they're building on that. With your kicking game how close is the competition between Joey [Julius] and his backups, and what does he have to do to maybe take the next step? We chart every single kick. So we chart what hash it's on, the distance of the kick, the operation time in terms of the snap to the kick to when it gets oA, so it won't get blocked. We have a net. Whether it's a live kicking situation or whether it's just on air, there's a net that simulates guys jumping up to block [the kick, so] that has to get to a certain height. We chart it all, and it's very close. I mean you're talking about prob- ably over 250 kicks, and I want to say it's within a percentage or two [between the] two of them. Joey right now is in the lead. Tyler [Davis] is a little bit older, a little bit more mature, a little bit more seasoned. But it's very, very close. We were just having a discussion before I came over here. You have all these discussions pre- season, and game week you go out there in warmups and you say, "OK. Going in this direction towards the student sec- tion, what do we have to get to to be in Eeld goal range? Going away from the student section, what yard line do we have to be to get in Eeld goal range?" That deals with weather, that deals with wind, that deals with a lot of things that go into it. To be honest with you, right now, with Joey I don't know if there's a diAerence. I don't know if there's a dif- ference whether it's a 28-yard Eeld goal or whether it's a 58-yard Eeld goal. His percentage of hitting and percentage of missing doesn't really change a whole lot. That's probably the one thing I would say with him that he needs to work on. Kickers are usually very rou- tine-oriented, guys who are very spe- ciEc about how they step oA their approach, how they hit the ball, even lit- tle mannerisms they do. Joe's more like – I would probably characterize him more like Babe Ruth. I mean he just grabs the bat, walks up and smacks it. I like that part of him but I also know if he could have a little bit more of that de- tail-oriented approach that most kickers have – very similar to a golfer, really working on their swing and the consis- tency in their swing and those types of things – I think would be helpful for him. But I do like the fact that if I go to Joe and say, "Joe, we've got a 61-yard Eeld goal. Can you hit it?" There is no doubt in my mind that Joe's going to say no doubt and he'll be running on the Eeld before I even call it. So I like that conE- dence that he has in himself, and what I think he needs to embrace is just that approach of being a detail-oriented guy and come up with an SOP – a standard operating procedure of how he goes about his business every single day.
