UNDER THE DOME CONSTRUCTION NOISE Notre Dame's four illegal motion penalties by four different starting offensive linemen against Texas might not have been just a case of opening game rust. The acoustics inside Notre Dame Stadium have been affected by the Campus Crossroads project surrounding it, including nine‑story buildings being raised on the west and east sides. Often criticized for having a more placid, corporate‑centered crowd, Notre Dame Stadium has not been heralded as a place opponents fear to play in recent years (decades?). The recent construction though has helped keep the noise more funneled within the stands. "We were all a little taken aback by the loud noise that was on that stadium floor," said head coach Brian Kelly while preparing for the road game at Virginia. "We have to kind of change our approach in terms of cadence. We had never used nonverbal [hand signals] at home before. We're going to put that in this week — we're on the road, so we're doing it anyway. "But I think the new construction in the stadium has definitely contributed to the noise factor on the field." Junior right tackle Mike McGlinchey was the lone starting Irish offensive lineman not hit with an offside penalty. "It's part of the game," McGlinchey said of what can be considered as refreshing home noise. "It's the way games turn out sometimes. It's hectic out there, it's loud and emotions can get high. You have to be able to focus in and communicate with everybody around you and know what your job is." Snap Count Totals Vs. Texas Several years ago, Blue & Gold Illustrated used to publish the snap counts of each player after a game. The numbers were compiled by the student managers on the football team and then sent to the school's sports information office, from where the information was obtained. That practice ceased around 2011. This year BGI assistant editor Andrew Owens is attempting to compile his own snap counts, and we hope to pub- lish each week from the previous Saturday's game. Here is the breakdown versus Texas in the Sept. 5 opener: QUARTERBACKS Player 1st String 2nd String Total Malik Zaire 60 0 60 DeShone Kizer 0 14 14 RUNNING BACKS Player 1st String 2nd String Total C.J.
