The record is 90.9 percent (10 of 11) that sophomore Steve Beuerlein had during a 55‑14 rout of Colorado in 1984. However, among the top five single‑game completion percent‑ ages in Notre Dame history, Zaire's is the only one where at least 20 passes were attempted. The previous single‑game completion percentage record for the Irish by a quarterback who attempted at least 20 passes was Jimmy Clausen's 84.6 (22 of 26) during a 49‑21 victory versus Hawaii in the 2008 Hawaii Bowl. Here are the top five overall: Rk. QB (Year/Opponent) Comp. Pct. 1. S. Beuerlein (1984/Colorado) 90.9 (10‑11) 2. Malik Zaire (2015/Texas) 86.4 (19‑22) 3t. Jarious Jackson (1998/Navy) 85.7 (12‑14) 3t. Rick Mirer (1991/Purdue) 85.7 (12‑14) 3t. R. Slager (1976/Northwestern) 85.7 (12‑14) "Father Jenkins, a passionate defender of his alma mater, has considered the arguments. He agrees that the NCAA is struggling to find its role on a changed playing field. And, in what may come as a surprise, he suggests that student‑athletes should be able to mon‑ etize their fame, with limits. "But he adamantly opposes a model in which college sheds what is left of its amateur ways for a semiprofessional structure — one in which universities pay their athletes. 'Our relationship to these young people is to educate them, to help them grow,' he says. 'Not to be their agent for financial gain.' "And if that somehow comes to pass, he says, Notre Dame will leave the profitable industrial complex that is elite college football, boosters be damned, and explore the creation of a conference with like‑minded universities. "That's right: Notre Dame would take its 23.9‑karat‑gold‑flecked football helmets and play elsewhere." — A New York Times article featuring university president Fr. John Jenkins and how Notre Dame would handle the scenario of college football adopting a semi-pro model
