"I know Coach [Brian] VanGorder's frustrated with some things that hap- pened out there in the pass defense that we'll have to clean up, but [they are] correctable things," Kelly said after the game. "We just didn't play the ball very well in the air. We made some really silly mistakes, trying to play a screen on a third-and-15 when we just needed to be the deepest de- fenders." There were a number of self-inflicted wounds, like a missed interception on a third-down pass and an early pen- alty that helped prolong a Cavalier drive. "We were off the field, and we get a dumb personal foul penalty that sets up a score," Kelly explained, referring to a 15-yard penalty on sophomore end Andrew Trumbetti. "It's poor things that lead to giving up 416 yards in the game and the kind of situation we had today. "We'll clean up a lot of stuff." In the opener against Texas, the Irish defensive line was dominant, leading an attack that registered four sacks and eight quarterback hurries, while also shutting down the run. Notre Dame was far less effective against Virginia, notching just one sack and recording zero hurries. The Irish never seemed to get a read on what Virginia was trying to do. "They didn't run the ball necessarily effectively inside the tackles," Kelly said. "Thy got the ball outside a couple of times through some of their shifting and speed packages, and they out- flanked us a couple times in the third quarter. … Most of their stuff was mis- direction, fly sweeps, jet sweep series.
