They obviously hurt us with three
plays in the first half."
Virginia offensive coordinator Steve
Fairchild called a number of well-de-
signed and well-executed plays that
resulted in long gains for the Cavalier
offense. Fairchild was diverse with his
formations and motions, which kept
the Irish off-balance and allowed him
to get matchups against Notre Dame
defenders that worked in his favor. He
was also not afraid to dial up a trick
play or two.
"The reverse pass, they matched
up with James Onwualu. We had a
bad matchup there with our person-
nel on the deep throw," said Kelly,
referring to a 38-yard pitch and catch
from Johns to senior wideout Canaan
Severin.
JAYLON SMITH SHINES
One bright spot for Notre Dame was
the play of junior All-American line-
backer Jaylon Smith, who led the Irish
with 11 tackles and 2.5 for lost yardage
Junior linebacker Jaylon Smith finished with a game-high 11 tackles, including 2.5 for loss.
