"I told him that I really wanted to
play for him, and that I've decided to
be 100 percent committed. I want to
win championships, and I want to get
my degree from the University of Notre
Dame. He was pretty excited; he was
happy."
During the visit, the family toured
the campus and learned about the aca-
demic side of the school, among other
activities. And there was that football
game against the Texas Longhorns, too
— a night contest with an electric at-
mosphere that ended in a 38-3 win for
the Irish.
"It was an outstanding trip," Kevin
Mooney said. "I can't begin to tell you
how kind and thoughtful everyone at
the university was, from the academic
side of the school and the folks that we
interacted with there, as well as the bas-
ketball coaching staff and players, the
athletic director. Everyone was just so
kind.
"My wife Margaret and I were very
comfortable; John was comfortable. It
was a family experience that was too
good to pass up."
Mooney's favorite part of the trip to
campus was pickup sessions with the
