(The Nittany Lions' game against Canadian team Windsor on Oct. 4 is not considered part of the regular season.) Notre Dame's two- game appearance at Pegula will be the 9rst of four annual meetings between the two schools, which have played their share of sub-zero football over the years but have never met on actual ice. Notre Dame returns 15 players who saw action in 20 or more games last season, including the Hockey East conference's fourth-leading scorer, Mario Lucia, and goalie Cal Petersen, who tied for the league lead with four shutouts. But Penn State enjoyed one of college hockey's most pronounced home-ice advan- tages a year ago, going 13-2-3 at Pegula, and with the Roar Zone having recently sold out in 9ve minutes, that edge is unlikely to diminish this coming season. WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL Lions romp through nonconference season Penn State didn't drop a single set in cruising through its nonconfer- ence schedule, and while that was an impressive accomplishment on its own, it was even more remarkable given that one of the 11 teams the top-ranked Nittany Lions swept was then-No. 2 Stanford. Playing before 6,055 fans in Rec Hall on Sept. 5 – it was the team's largest home crowd since a match against USC in August 2012 – Penn State defeated the Cardinal 25-21, 25-22, 25-18. Ali Frantti and Aiyana Whitney both had 13 kills, and Megan Court- ney had 11 kills and 13 digs as the Nittany Lions dealt the Cardinal its first straight-set loss in nearly two years. "I think the key to the match was just the energy in the building," head coach Russ Rose said. "We started a little sloppy and competed in the first game but we weren't really clean. It's a great team victory. I thought a lot of people really stepped up and did some great things." Freshman setter Bryanna Weiskircher dished out a career- high 41 assists, pacing the team to a .327 hitting percentage. Weiskircher and freshman libero Keeton Hol- comb tied for second on the team with eight digs each. The Nittany Lions wrapped up their nonconference season with sweeps of St. John's and South Florida on Sept. 19 in Tampa to claim the championship of the South Florida Invitational. Penn State began its Big Ten sea- son on Sept. 23 against Wisconsin. Heading into that home showdown with one of the Big Ten's perennial powers, it had won 31 consecutive matches, a streak dating back to Oc- tober 2014. ■ SCORECARD
