JAY HAYES SITS OUT On a scholarship roster of 85 play- ers, not everyone can play, which can often lead to frustration for a num- ber of athletes. The issue for Notre Dame is that discontent boiled over publicly on Twitter the week of the UMass game. Late in the evening of Sept. 22, soph- omore defensive lineman Jay Hayes expressed his frustration over a lack of playing time on Twitter. First, he tweeted, "When a coach stops coaching you..that's when you jus [sic] gotta move on." He then added, "Gotta get this natty [national championship] and I'm out." Because of the social media posts, he did not travel to the hotel for the game against UMass, but did dress for it, head coach Brian Kelly said. "There has to be responsibility as it relates to social media, and you have to think before you hit send," Kelly said Thursday. "What you have to do is knock on my door instead of hitting the send button. These are good les- sons to be learned. "If he has a job at Google and he talks about his boss that way, he's probably not going to have a job the next day. You try to use them as life lessons.
