ND SPORTS Irish Roundup CROSS COUNTRY Both the Irish men and women captured first place at the National Catholic Invitational Sept. 18 at the Burke Golf Course in South Bend. The women dominated with a score of 20 points, well ahead of second-place Xavier (84). The men (40 points) squeaked out a win with over runner-up Canisius (41). Freshman Anna Rohrer captured the first individual title in her Irish career, completing the 5,000-meter course in 17:20.7. Senior Timothy Ball led the men's team with a third-place showing, clocking 25:09.2 in the 8,000-meter race. Both squads will compete in the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational Oct. 2 at the Notre Dame Golf Course in South Bend. MEN'S GOLF The Irish tied with St. Mary's to pick up co-champion honors at the 12-team Fighting Irish Golf Classic Sept. 21-22 in South Bend. Junior Blake Barens was the top finisher for the squad, tying for second place with a 3-under-par 210 (71-70-69). Notre Dame will next take part in the Tar Heel Invitational Oct. 3-4 at Chapel Hill, N.C. WOMEN'S GOLF Notre Dame placed fifth out of 12 teams in the Schooner Fall Classic Sept. 19-21 at Norman, Okla. The Irish were led by freshman Emma Albrecht, who finished 12th overall in the field of 66 with a 3-under-par 139 (71-68). Her final score set a school record for 36 holes. The next outing for the Irish will be at the Chip-N-Club Invitational Oct. 5-6 in Lincoln, Neb. MEN'S SOCCER (5-2-1) The No. 14 Irish dropped from No. 2 in the polls following a 1-0 home loss to Xavier Sept. 15 and a 4-2 defeat at then-No. 3 North Carolina Sept. 18. Notre Dame ended its two-game losing streak with a 4-0 victory at Michigan State Sept. 22. goaltending. "We played four freshmen defense- men last year on a pretty regular basis and a freshman goaltender. That bodes well for us and builds that excitement, knowing we have a group that has faced adversity together." The preseason media poll was a kinder to the Irish, ranking them fifth with 250 points, even giving Notre Dame a first place vote. Boston College (397) and Bos- ton University (374) still led that poll, but Massachusetts Lowell rounded out the media's top three, replacing Providence for the third spot, totaling 344 points. Additionally, the Hockey East an- nounced that a number of games will be televised through American Sports Net- work (ASN), including Notre Dame's home contests versus Minnesota Duluth Oct. 23, Minnesota Nov. 6 and North- eastern Nov. 12. The specific channels those games will be broadcast on will be announced at a later date. ✦
